3. Zodiac. Serial-killer thrillers have become box-office gold for decades, but this David Fincher film is unique in its portrayal of the obsessions developed by the pursuers. Starring Mark Ruffalo as a frustrated cop and Robert Downey, Jr. as a cynical reporter, it's cartoonist Jake Gyllenhall who finally can't put the case down, sacrificing his family and career in the process. This film delivers the chills on Showtime in HD.

2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. As if the world needed another reason to love kung-fu movies, this Ang Lee picture got deep into the philosophical and human aspects of great warriors. One of the first films to successfully incorporate computer-generated images into fight scenes, Crouching Tiger features duels on tree branches and escapes over seventy-foot walls. More than anything, the film showcased its director's formidable talents. This film is one foreign film always in heavy rotation on satellite TV.

1. There Will Be Blood. What would Oscar do without a snarling performance from perennial contender Daniel Day-Lewis? I know what you're thinking: look for a Sean Penn movie. Seriously, Day-Lewis seems possessed even by his standards, with mustache and wardrobe allowing for further departures. A tale of a ruthless oil man in the American West of the Industrial Revolution, the film is Paul Thomas Anderson's most fully realized work, a must-see at home in high definition.
